Design Star: Buh Bye Temple

Last night’s challenge on HGTV’s “Design Star” was to design a room around a randomly chosen color. Alice’s color was blue, Temple’s was yellow, David got red, & Tim got green. Temple was finally sent home, even though she had some of the best space planning organization.  I liked her room, but bottom line, I just wouldn’t watch a show she was hosting.  Over & over the judges said that everyone interpreted the color too “literally”. What were they supposed to do, say my color was yellow so I painted the walls pink. Then I thought about it….maybe. Here’s what I would have done.

If I had gotten a color I wasn’t too thrilled about like Temple was with yellow I would have interpreted it as a joke. I would have taken a sunburst mirror, lemons in a fruit bowl, whatever is typically yellow, & painted them all pink. I would have made sure the roomy had a bright sunny feeling, but not any yellow.

I don’t like most shades of blue, so for Alice’s room I would have painted the walls brown, and kept everything very neutral. Then I would have put one large blue item in the center of the room, like a large bowl on a coffee table. Then the blue would have really popped and made a statement without being too overwhelming.

I probably would’ve gotten sent home for either of my ideas, but I don’t want to host my own show on HGTV anyways. My least favorite room was David’s. I thought that the bed should’ve have been on the other side and didn’t understand the point of building a cubicle around your couch & TV. What do you think, who should have gone home last night? How would you have interpreted the challenge?

DIY: Can I paint vinyl flooring?

Yes. You can paint linoleum. Should you? Maybe, there’s a nice straight forward answer for you. There’s a few tips to keep in mind.

1. For durability, the key is to seal the floor several times.

2. Aesthetically, I think variation and different shades of color needs to be added, these occur in all other types of flooring, otherwise it just looks like a painted floor.

3. Paint will obviously not change the texture of your floor, so keep in mind that you will still have that diamond pattern showing through.

4. Also, carefully consider cost. Paint seems like it will be the cheapest, but if you are working with a small area, once you factor in the primer, paint, and sealer, it may be just as cheap to lay down tile.

So I say give it a try, if you don’t like it you will only have to take up the vinyl you were going to replace anyways. If you decide to go for it, HGTV has a great video with step by step instructions, just scroll down the list to “Vinyl Floor Facelift”. Have you ever painted a vinyl floor? Would you paint vinyl? Leave a comment and let me know.

How to tell the Salt & Pepper Shakers Apart

iconicon Ok, I may be eternally mocked for stating the obvious, but I’m curious how many people know how to tell the salt and pepper shakers apart. I was with some friends and noticed the boy pouring some salt in his hand while he said that he was just checking to make sure he got the right one. I told him that the salt shaker always has more holes in it because people want more salt than pepper. Of the entire group of college educated people, I was the only person who had heard this. So what do you think? Is this common knowledge or not? How else do you tell the salt & pepper shakes apart? Check out other great “Works-for-me-Wednesday” Tips at Rocks in my Dryer.

Free Art Painting Tutorial: Dots

How many times have you looked at a piece of art and thought, I could do that? Well you are right, you can. Pick up a few canvases, craft paints and brushes at a craft store or Wal-Mart, and your career as an artist has begun. I will be creating a few basic art tutorials that are great for a beginner, or even a great craft for kids. I call this piece dots, because well there’s dots on it.

1. First, draw out the dots. I just traced around a glass to get a perfect circle. Make some of the dots overlap, or have them only half on the page.

2. Second, fill around the dots with color. I used two coats of brown paint so the background was very solid. Use a flat brush to get a clean, crisp line.

3. Next, fill in the dots with any color you want.  Think about what colors you would wear in an outfit, and use those.

If you want to you can crumple up a piece of paper towel, and sponge the dots with a lighter color. This will add texture. That’s all it takes. See, painting isn’t scary. Just pick up a brush and get painting. I framed my picture in a funky frame to give it an eclectic look. If you follow this tutorial please post links to your paintings in the comments.
