One of the easiest ways to make a headboard for not a lot of money is to have an upholstered headboard.  Upholstered headboards are the latest rage, & they are very comfortable if you read in bed. All you need is some fabric & a staple gun, & a form.  You might even be able to use your current headboard.  I have an upholstered headboard & when I want a change I just buy $5 worth of fabric, & then spend 15 minutes stapling it on.  These can sell for hundreds of dollars in the stores, but you can cover it in velvet, suede, or fake leather, & get that look for only a few dollars.
