I’ve decided that I am going to name each problem with 90′s decor, & then how to update the problem & fix it. I don’t know if the color Forest Green had just never been seen before, but it prompted it’s very own movement in the 1990′s. This room usually had:
A faux finish sponge paint on the wall. This usually resembled mold, & was done in colors that didn’t go together, such as the blue & pink sponge painting I had in one apartment.
There were two options for flooring in the 90′s green monster room: White or pinkish taupe ceramic tile. The other option was to have inexpensive, shiny burgundy or forest green carpet. I think this will be one of the most memorable things about the average 90′s room, the green carpet.
You only had one choice for a sofa in the 1990′s, checked. This usually meant a harsh green & white checked sofa that looked like a picnic gone horribly wrong.
As far as other furniture, the 90′s introduced us to the armoire. Never mind that the doors were always open so we could watch TV, we at last had the capability to hide the TV. Coffee tables came in two varieties, pine, or the ever popular log furniture. This was best when used in a matching set.
Accessories were kept to a minimum & were usually functional. Case in point, the unfinished, square wooden handles that were used on all kitchen cabinets & furniture . Oh & anything hunter green, such as new tupperware, or a hunter green telephone.
Overall, this room was characterized as being cold. To make up for the coldness, pattern was introduced to save the day, but annoying patterns were chosen. Don’t worry, tomorrow I will write how to easily update this room.

Very funny commentary. I often look back at the 90′s and am so happy I stuck with my “50′s modern” style (as I called it back then) and resisted the sponging and hunter green days. Although at the time I doubted myself.
And my mother was right, everything comes back in style.
