The 1990’s: The Mad Hatters House

The last style that was prevalent in the 1990′s was the birth of Contemporary design. More often then not, this ended up looking like the Mad Hatter’s house gone horribly wrong, & here is why:

Two colors could be used in Contemporary design, deep purple & gold.

Slate was our friend, put it on the fireplace, the floor, the coffee table, any available surface.

There was only one fabric to choose from if you wanted contemporary design, purple & gold swirls.

A matching wallpaper border was optional.

At least one piece of furniture be painted in a harlequin pattern.

Pillows, lots & lots of pillows, but they couldn’t be anything special.  Each pillow had to be quite ordinary, & there was just a lot of them.

This style might not seem that outdated, it isn’t, so it is an easy fix for anyone looking for an update.

Why didn’t I think of that?

I’ll admit it, I love a beautiful house, but I don’t like to clean. However, I have found that the right cleaning supplies make all the difference. For instance, did you know that there is a special cleaner just for leather? There is even a cool leather marker to touch up scratches on your vinyl. If you use the right products, it makes the job a lot easier, plus it keeps your furniture looking better for longer. Furniture is a big investment, which most of us will make once every decade or so. It makes sense to keep it clean & looking it’s best.

Chair redo

The bathroom makeover spread to other rooms.  We have a basic glider, that my mom being the sewing genius that she is, recovered a few years ago.  The wood is worn & we were sick of the floral. However, it still looked better than most of the gliders of it’s kind, but we wanted a change. So while we had the stain out, we did the same process on the chair.  My mom sewed a new cover with fabric we got from Walmart for $2-$3 a yard.  The cushions are reversible. It took her about a day, & the total cost was about $7. This has to be the coolest looking glider I’ve ever seen.

Instant Popularity

Popularity when you are a teenager can be difficult to come by. You have to wear the right clothes, talk to the right people, participate in the right activities. Or you can just skip all that & be the house in the neighborhood with the pool. I guess that still is true for adults, everyone wants to hang out at the house with the pool or spa. Owning a pool isn’t as out of your reach as you think. Blue haven Pools & Spas makes it easy to order, & has outstanding customer service. Plus, you save a lot of money & they even have a 99 day money back guarantee. Don’t forget all the pool supplies too, like cleaning supplies, toys & even fun vinyl liners.

Just how lazy am I?

Tomorrow is daylight savings time.  I am not a big fan of this whole daylight savings time thing. I know, I also get to sleep in for another hour. I know people who keep their regular schedule on Sunday & then change on Monday, so they get their extra hour on the day they need it the most.

This still doesn’t change my contempt for this practice. Mostly because it means that I will have to change all my clocks back.  However, I never get around to changing all the clocks back, so I end up just subtracting an hour until it’s the fall. That way I won’t have to change my clock forward either.  It sure messes up anyone who is visiting though. I’m a one woman island who refuses to acknowledge daylight savings time. What’s your funny daylight savings time story?

Update: The power of positive thinking made me set my clock back, which meant I was two hours late this morning.  I knew changing my clock was a bad idea.
