My Happy Place

I have another decorating blog, where I just posted about my bedroom redo for under $50.  It was a lot of work, the decorating, not the blog.  Well, the blog was a lot of work too, but I think that we are losing our focus here, & by we I mean me.  Anyways, I’ve been living with the room for two months now & I still love everything about it. It’s so soothing to have a nice calm space where I can just come to relax.  It’s the only room t hat I’ve ever had that still wows me after several months.  It’s my happy place.

Little things add up

I live in Utah, which is technically desert, but you wouldn’t always know that because of all the green lawns that are around. I personally like the idea of Artificial grass, because it doesn’t take any water, & there is no pollution from running a lawn mower. Plus there is the added benefit that I don’t have to run the lawnmower, which is a huge plus. The only downside is that it doesn’t feel the way that natural grass does underneath your feet, but it looks fine. Artificial grass has come a long way since the astro turf era. It really does look like real grass, oftentimes even better because there aren’t any dead spots. It’s a small price to pay for helping out on that whole global warming issue, which I think we all need to start taking little steps to alleviating a big problem. I think that we haven’t done anything because it is just too daunting, but I think if we all started doing something it would make a big difference.

Extreme Home Makeover

A man decided to take his pending divorce into his own hands, by sawing his house in half & taking his half to his brother’s house.  Yup, sounds like something a boy would do :P   Actually it sounds more like king Solomon. I’m just kidding, maybe he just really wanted to be in "Weird News".  I would just think that at some point in the process of sawing a house in half, I would stop & think "Is this really worth it?" Maybe that’s just me.

The 1990’s: The Mad Hatters House Update

I think the problem with the Contemporary design of the 1990′s is that it wasn’t cohesive.  I actually got dizzy in a few of these rooms.  It is an easy update though & here is how:

Keep either the gold, or the purple, you can’t have both.  This will make a huge change as these two colors are so predictable in Contemporary design.

Update the fabric & take down the border.

Slate is still your friend.  Maybe take the coffee table to another room though. Add in another material though, or put down a rug to soften it.

Simplify.  If you want to keep the harlequin pattern on the armoire, great.  Just make sure that is one of the only patterns in the room so it really stands out, & is the focal point.

I think that was the problem with this design, there was no focal point, everywhere you looked there was something else going on.  So to update this, create a focal point.

Fireplace Fiasco

I love a fireplace, I think every house should have at least one. However, they can be a hassle, with all the hauling of wood, & the cleaning up, & of course the safety issues. I tried to light a fire once when the power was out in our wood stove. I just couldn’t make it happen, it took me two hours & ended up with a houseful of smoke, & no fire. I was so frustrated, I was practically yelling at the fireplace “I have a college education I can do this”. This had me thinking, there has to be an easier way, which is why I want to get portable heaters or at least a gas log which will take care a lot of my problems with the fireplace & be safer. This way I’ll still be able to use the fireplace, with a lot less hassle.
