A House with a View

One thing that a lot of home buyers forget about is, to look at the view. They are so busy looking at the inside of the house, that they don’t take the time to really look out the window & see what they will be looking at for years to come. This is a big mistake because the inside of a house can easily be changed, but good luck changing the view out the windows. Location really is everything in real estate. If you have a view you love, you will always feel like you are on vacation & lucky to be living where you do.

For instance, if you go with Blue Ridge real estate they can help you find a cabin or home in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains that will probably have breath taking views. A lot of the area belongs to the U.S. Forest Service, so you’re almost guaranteed a good view. Jason Towe has lived in the area his entire life, so he can get you the view that you are looking for.

BRRRR Update

Yesterday, I posted about how I think that the modern style will someday be seen as cold.  This is unfortunate because it is one of the most expensive styles that I have seen.  There are ways to put together a room which will save you money & make it into a classic style that will last for years to come.

1.  Prioritize.  Do you really need/want granite countertops & stainless steel appliances?  Is that really you?  Would you love it even if it wasn’t a trend & everyone hated stainless steel?  Have you seen stainless steel appliances & granite countertops in use? How do they hold up? If you do love it, & can afford it, then by all means go for it. If not, think outside the box & explore your options.

2.  Accessories.  Add in a mod 60′s tomato red lamp or some funky art work.  This will ground the room & keep it from  feeling like you just walked into page 72 of the Sears catalog.

3.  Soften modern lines with a nice fuzzy throw that will add warmth to the room.

I think the main thing with this style, because it is so trendy is to make sure you really love it.  Do you really think that sink is a piece of art?  Will you love it for decades?  Ok then, it’s yours.  Just balance it out both budget & design wise with things that can be easily changed according to the next trend.

Details, Details

I like to think that what makes a house a home is in the details. We all have the same basic structure: walls; ceilings; floors. What makes a house unique, & a place that people want to be, is a special attention to the little things. This can be as simple as having a unique telephone.

Whether you need special hearing impaired phones, or cordless phones, or even a novelty phone, be sure to find one that suits your personal style, & the style of your home. I was amazed at the selection of phones at www.thephoneresource.com, they have everything from cool 1920′s phones, to 1940′s wall phones & even a replica payphone. They are much more affordable than I thought they would be. This will actually save you a lot of money on decorating. It only takes one really unique piece like this to make a room. It is the conversation piece, & the focal point. Don’t forget the details.

BRRRRR

The 2000′s had a big return to modern styling.  This may seem like it will never leave, & it’s ok to invest $4000 in countertops.  Maybe it is, maybe this is the new classic look. What are your thoughts on it?  Here are some things indicative of this type of style.

1.  Clean lines.  Not a curve in sight. On furniture, on cabinetry, on lamps.  Everywhere.

2.  Stainless Steel appliances.  It suddenly has become the norm to pay several thousand dollars for a fridge or stove when most people still don’t cook.

3.  Bowl sinks.  You know those cool sinks that sit above the vanity? I love these, but I think this will become the most outdated & people will just want their sinks to be back in the countertop. This is one of the biggest trends that I think will just be a fad.

4.  Hardwood floors.  Once again, only the best for this modern style.  I think a lot of these are classic & will last forever.  I think that bamboo floors look awesome, but I think they will become dated very quickly.

6. Granite.  Absolutely everyone must have a granite countertop.  It goes with the stainless steel appliances.  Again, most of these people don’t cook.

7. Squares on walls.  I don’t know who first started painting these, but they’ve become big.  It’s also true for art work.  There are so many people with the painting that is just two blocks of color with a white stripe in between.

I think the problem with this look is that in a few years it will be construed as "cold’ & people will be rushing out to buy an avocado stove.  However, tomorrow I will post about how to get this look & keep it classic.

Tie a ribbon

It’s often said that babies cry more in yellow rooms than in any other room.  So maybe yellow isn’t such a good choice for a nursery.  I once spent 48 hours babysitting in a yellow room & it was one of the only times I could literally feel the color on the wall. However, yellow isn’t all that bad. Yellow is the ribbon choice to tie around oak trees, per the following song.

Tie a Yellow Ribbon Tony Orlando & Dawn

I’m comin’ home, I’ve done my time

Now I’ve got to know what is and isn’t mine

If you received my letter telling you I’d soon be free

Then you’ll know just what to do

 If you still want me

 If you still want me

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon ’round the old oak tree

It’s been three long years Do ya still want me?

If I don’t see a ribbon round the old oak tree I’ll stay on the bus

Forget about us Put the blame on me

If I don’t see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree Bus driver, please look for me ’cause I couldn’t bear to see what I might see

I’m really still in prison And my love, she holds the key

A simple yellow ribbon’s what I need to set me free I wrote and told her please

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree It’s been three long years

Do ya still want me? If I don’t see a ribbon round the old oak tree I’ll stay on the bus Forget about us

Put the blame on me If I don’t see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree

Now the whole damned bus is cheerin’ And I can’t believe I see A hundred yellow ribbons round the old oak tree I’m comin’ home (Tie a ribbon round the old oak tree)

Yellow  is often paired with blue.  However, I think putting yellow with a taupe, is one of the most surprising color combinations. This makes the yellow more serene looking which confuses the mind a little because it is yellow, it isn’t supposed to be soothing. This is a color combination that I can’t wait to try in my own home.
