Design that lasts

Usually I get sick of my decor every few weeks.  I’ve planned it out so much that by the time I actually get everything done, I don’t want to look at it anymore.  It’s a lot like when you cook for a few hours & by the time you’re done you can’t stand looking at the dish that you made.  This morning I woke up & thought  "I love this room", even though I’ve been living with it for six months.  It’s such a peaceful place.  I usually gravitate towards bright orange, but I wanted this to be a soothing place so everything is taupe or white.  This was quite the change from the bright green that was there before.  I think this is because of the use of neutral colors so it’s soothing, but enough texture to not feel blah, it still feels interesting.

Where has all the style gone

I realized today that it’s been quite awhile since decorating has really changed.  It seems like we’re stuck in an era of ultra suede sofas & granite countertops.  Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough.  Styles seem to change radically every few years.  I guess I haven’t seen as many "Tuscan" living rooms which look like Italian restaurants.  (I can’t imagine why that would seem outdated). However, I still don’t know what has replaced that, look if anything.  The modern style seems more prevalent, but it’s always been en vogue for the past few years.  I guess I have some work to do.

Pure Luck

Usually when I sit down to paint, I have everything laid out.  I know what colors & techniques I’m going to use, & what picture or tutorial I will work from.  This painting happened one day when I sat down & didn’t know what to paint.  I had a lot of time on my hands & the painting was getting finished much too fast for my liking, so I turned the beach into a series of small dots which I had never done before.  Then I took a dry brush & brushed the colors together for an aged effect.  I couldn’t have done this well if I had tried.  Sometimes it pays to just let yourself go & let the painting just happen.
