Think outside the frame

lamppost.jpg

It’s not always feasible to have the piece of artwork that you want in your room. It can be too expensive, you can’t get it made, or it’s just too obvious. For instance, the above picture is a stock photo that I fell in love with.

However, I don’t really have the money or the means to have this in my home. Instead, I can have it inspire the feeling of my space. By looking at this picture I know that I want:

  • A very neutral color palette
  • A pop of black.
  • Possibly some wrought iron accents.
  • I’d also like simplicity with a traditional feeling as well as things at an angle.

So the next time you can’t afford to buy a van Gogh instead tried to recreate the feeling that the painting gave you.

Which decorator would you date?

I always get lonely at holiday time. Ok, so it’s only the fourth of July. For some reason, I got thinking about which decorator I would date. I definitely have to go with Ty Pennington. He’s strong. He’s funny. He travels a lot, so I wouldn’t get annoyed at how high energy he is. He can fix stuff around the house. Plus, he’s cute, & extreme makeover home edition makes me cry every week. He’s met Oprah. Ty, where are you?

The coolness factor

billiards.jpg When I was growing up, the only place to play pool was in bars. As a kid, we of course couldn’t go in there. So my parents bought us a pool table. We then learned of the magical power that pool tables have. I don’t care how old you are, if your house has a pool table in it, people will automatically gather there.

Bostontables is a great place to pick up a pool table with their nationwide shipping. I was shocked at how low their prices are. It’s amazing how fashionable pool tables have become. They almost look like dining tables, I definitely wouldn’t mind one in my home. Gas prices are so high, if you have a pool table, yours will definitely be the cool house to hang out in.

Garage Decorating

I’ve been thinking about more cost effective ideas to spruce up the forgotten room, the garage.

  • Try painting the floor. You can even use concrete stain for a more elegant look.
  • Don’t forget the walls. Would you leave the walls unfinished in any other room in your house? Then why not make the entrance into your home beautiful as well?
  • It seems like white is the obvious paint choice for a garage. However, this room is completely sepearate from most of your house, so you can be adventurous. You can even paint a really fun color like hot pink, or red.
  • Garages don’t have to be piled high with boxes. You can build cupboards, or buy shelves, & even hide clutter behind curtains or screens.

Decorating investment

Art is of course essential in decorating. This is really where the investment should go, because it’s the only piece of decorating that will actually gain value over time, sofas definitely don’t do that.

Park West Art Gallery has the largest collection of fine art in the world. Pretty impressive isn’t it? They even have a sister company called Park West at Sea that auctions arts on cruise ships. There is a sale section, & you can even search by artist. I found some gorgeous Thomas Kinkade lithographs, the only difficult part is choosing which one I want. There is surely a piece of art here that you can base an entire room around.
