The one thing I’m missing

verandah.jpg

Writing about porches earlier reminded me of my favorite decorating word ever, veranda. It’s just so romantic sounding, & I don’t get to say it near enough. It reminds me of Gone with the Wind. Tera definately was the kind of house that would have a veranda, & Scarlett was the kind of person who would say the word veranda.

I wondered if the two words were interchangeable, because my house has a porch, but does it have a veranda? I didn’t want all of the other kids to point & laugh. Veranda is a little pretentious sounding so I wanted to make sure I actually owned one before I started throwing around sentences like “Let’s go have lemonade on the veranda”.

Apparently, a veranda is a porch with a railing or ballister. I don’t know what a ballister is per say, but I’m hoping it’s an archway or post. If that’s the case, I do have a veranda after all.

Decorating with Fruit

I’ve heard on Oprah several times that she likes to keep fresh fruit in the house. It’s really the perfect centerpiece. Fruit adds a pop of color, plus it is useful & can be eaten as a snack. Besides the fact that there aren’t a lot of things that Oprah suggests that I can actually integrate into my everyday life, so when I find something, I hold onto it. I always say, if it’s good enough for Oprah, it’s good enough for me.

Sometimes, when I go to the grocery store, the selection of fruit just looks horrible. So I went & looked at The Fruit Companywhich specializes in fruit baskets. They were even featured in Oprah’s O Magazine. They have a great selection of fruit, (there’s even a monthly fruit club). Plus, they have gourmet chocolates & even fruit cheesecakes with mouth watering flavors like carmel apple. If you haven’t had Rainer cherries yet, you haven’t lived. I love the color of Rainer cherries & the taste is out of this world. They make great gifts, or just save yourself a trip to the grocery store.

I was surprised at how inexpensive the fruit is, especially since it comes with a 100% guarantee. The Fruit Company will replace or exchange your gift, or offer you a full refund if you aren’t satisfied with your purchase for any reason. The grocery store can’t say that.

Bridesmaid Decorating Revenge

satindress.jpg

I was watching an episode of “Moving Up” where the girl had been a bridesmaid about a zillion times. You could tell that the old adage “always a bridesmaid, never a bride”, was getting to her. So she took all of her old bridesmaid dresses & made throw pillows out of them. It’s a very fairly easy to do sewing project, & it’s not like you will ever wear the dress again. Besides, it just seems fun to tear a bridesmaid’s dress apart. What to do with the dyed to match shoes? Well I still don’t have an answer for that.

What really makes a home

I try to make my home a beautiful place to live. However, I have fibromyalgia, so my main concern is comfort. I like linens that are beautiful, but are also soft to the touch. My couch should be in style, but also a place where I can chill out for hours on end.

It seems like I am always on the hunt for the perfect pillow. Today I was looking at the mediflow pillow, which is the only pillow available that has water as it’s support. You can adjust the pillow by adding more water. This is amazing because usually there is a different pillow if you sleep on your back, or on your side. This has always been difficult for me because I can sleep on both my back & side & don’t want to have two pillows.

Johns Hopkins even tested these pillows & found that they reduce neck pain. It was even ranked the best pillow in how fast people fall asleep. You don’t even have to wake up in the middle of the night to readjust your pillow which is something that I just realized that I do. A good night’s sleep is so important. It helps everything from energy, even down to reducing wrinkles. You can get these pillows in JC Penney or Target. It’s little things like these that really turn a house into a home.

The front Porch: Not as boring as it sounds

porch.jpg

I think that every house should have a front porch. A porch is a place to gather & talk, as well as a spot to really analyze the outside world. I was over at wikipedia & found out that porches are a lot more interesting that I thought. For instance, did you know that:

  • In Britain, a porch is what I would call a mudroom.
  • In Subdivisions in Ontario you can just assume that your house will come with a porch.
  • The Grand Hotel in Michigan has the longest porch which is 660 feet.
  • Decks are different than porches because they aren’t covered, are made out of bare wood, & aren’t usually integrated with the home.
