Dorm Dining

cafe.jpg

This picture isn’t in a home, it’s in a cafĂ©. It’s not even current. However I like how spunky and affordable this eclectic style is. We first saw the idea to mismatch chairs and tables in bright colors on the TV show FRIENDS, we really had never seen it before. The FRIENDS were doing it, so everyone else gad to, & the idea just stuck around. I think the idea was so attractive because chairs are just so expensive & this enabled people to pick up chairs at a garage sale, or thrift store. They didn’t even need to have a lot of paint, they could just use whatever colors of paint they had. Now, it seems to look quite designer & I’ve seen it in high end stores.

This is still a great style if you’re just starting out. This is ideal for a dorm room with white walls, it will really liven the place up. Unfortunately, all of my dining room chairs match, but someday, I’ll try this out.

Not Your Grandfather’s Grandfather Clock

I think that every family should have a real heirloom piece, a piece of furniture that can be passed down from generation to generation. This can be something as simple as a nice spoon, or a salt shaker, or something elaborate as Grandfather Clocks. I remember that a friend of mine had a grandfather clock in her hallway when I was a kid & I just wanted to stand there & listen to it chime. I was confused as to why she wasn’t in just complete awe that her family owned this.

Right now, most of my furniture is made out of particle board & was mass produced. There isn’t anything that would stand the test of time to be passed from generation to generation. Plus, if I bought a grandfather clock now, I’d get to enjoy it for many years. I was looking through several clocks & was surprised at how these have changed. The grandfather clocks are still finely crafted, but you can choose from all kinds of styles & even finishes, like a black grandfather clock. I think one of the biggest improvements is that you can choose a clock with bigger numbers, it seems like the traditional models were a little difficult to tell time with, which is the whole purpose of a clock to begin with.

My favorite grandfather clock is a city centre clock, like the kinds you see lining the streets in town. It’s just so unusual & would be the conversation piece to any room. There’s an awkward space in the entry way that isn’t big enough to put a chair in, a clock would be perfect there. Grandfather clocks are more hip, more contemporary, but still something every home should have.

Color Correction

When I first saw the new show on TV called “Color Correction”, I thought they were talking about hair color. However, I tuned in because Constance from “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was the host. She is either the best or worst host ever. Either she cares about color more than any one person should, or she’s faking it.

The show in itself in unremarkable, it’s just another color show & I wasn’t really that impressed with the before & after. For instance, if someone has been living with a green kitchen for 20 years, do you just come in & repaint their kitchen green? Color Correction sure thinks so, I don’t.

Living in Small Spaces

I was watching Oprah last week & Nate redecorated an apartment that was less than 300 square feet. Yeah, I’ve shared a dorm room, but I’ve never had to have a bedroom, bathroom, living room, office, dining room, & kitchen all in 200 odd square feet.

It also showed entire families living in similar small spaces because it’s all they could afford in a big city, or because they just liked it. I was wondering how they cope with kids. I guess they just have to simplify their lives & be very organized.

However, kids still need to be entertained, learn & have fun. There’s hardly room for regular clothes, let alone dress up clothes, or a pet. Enter webkinz virtual pets. The Cartoon Doll Emporium have over 800 virtual dolls that you can dress up for free. They have over 4 million people using their site every month. Even I love dressing up these dolls & I’m a grown up. This will really take care of the problem of having tons of crumpled paper dolls laying around the house, it’s a must if you live in a small space.
