Turn your home into a castle on a budget

I’ve been waiting to type that title ever since this season of “Design Star” started. The good news first, Rob got eliminated. The challenge was to redecorate Wayne Newton’s house, well his guest house. I had just seen Wayne Newton’s house on MTV cribs. Lots of gold, lots & lots & lots of gold. It wasn’t my taste, so I thought that it was smart that the designers were put in the guest house where they couldn’t hurt anything.

The designers also had to present their rooms on camera. Rob actually did a very good job. However, knowing what I know about him, I could never watch a show that he hosted. He just seemed so fake. Kim also did an excellent hosting job. I still want Todd to win. However, I don’t know how anything that he does will be applicable to the home audience. His ideas are just so out there. They work because he has tons of skills in every area. However, the average homeowner doesn’t have all of those skills. I could see him hosting a show kind of like “Monster House”. Time will tell.

I love making things with craft marbles. These marble magnets have been a huge trend in crafting. I recently made up a batch of craft marbles just so I could try & make jewelry out of them. However, I had some sort of crafting block. You know it’s like writer’s block, but with crafting. If you are experiencing the same thing whether it’s crafting, or graphic design here are a few tips. These should work anytime where you are supposed to just “Use what you like” & you can’t remember what it is that you like.

1. Monograms. People usually like themselves, & their names. Plus, these are really easy to make since it’s just a letter.

2. Textures. Just gather several textures in your favorite color. As long as you have a favorite color you’ll be fine. This will help you keep the set, or web design, cohesive while still being unique.

3. You can always use a favorite word, or a group of favorite words to convey what is important to you.

4. Look around your house & find the things that you love, why did you choose them? What do they have in common?

Just say no to crafter’s block.

I have a gift for shopping. We all have our talents, & that is mine. I usually find a great deal on whatever I am looking for in a very short amount of time. However, yesterday I spent almost all day shopping for a quilt covers in a panic.

I have an absolutely gorgeous alternative down comforter that was given to me. I recently found out how much it cost, & decided that I need to take better care of it. It’s a comforter that I want to have for a very long time because it’s very fluffy & keeps me really warm during those harsh Utah winters. I spent all day shopping for a duvet yesterday. I found a lot of pretty duvets that I couldn’t afford, & a lot of bland duvets that I could afford but didn’t like.

Today I went to Terry’s Fabrics & browsed their huge selection of bedding. They are a UK based store, & have beautiful duvets & pillowcases starting at just £5.00. It’s definitely the place to shop if you live in the UK. They have so many gorgeous printed & embroidered duvet covers. Now I have duvet envy.

This room reminded me of Emily Gilmore’s house for some reason. If something reminds me of “Gilmore Girls”, of course I’m going to write about it. However, this room looks a lot more cozy than Emily’s house. You could actually sit on the furniture in this room. I think the technical term for this decorating style is called faaaannnnncy. In order to achieve this kind of style, here are some things to keep in mind:

Muted colors speak of elegance. Think peaches, pinks, & light yellows.

These type of homes always seem to have couches with separate cushions. It seems to say that they can afford to have help around the house to keep everything looking orderly.

Patterned curtains. Yes, a simple curtain will stay in style for years. However, this kind of faaaaancy room is giving off the impression that money is no object.

Bling. Tasseled pillows, beaded lamp shades, & chandeliers will help this room feel very rich & these accessories will cost less than you might think.
