My biggest decorating secret is probably cleaning. Shocking I know. Whenever I watch a show on how to sell your house, most of the time at least half of the work is cleaning. Even washing your windows makes a room feel brighter & bigger. I detest walking into a beautifully decorated home that is a mess, it leaves me thinking “What’s the point?”
However, I don’t always heed my own advice. I would say that my housekeeping style is clean-ish. Things are usually in their place. It’s just that I detest vacuuming because the vacuum is over ten years old & seems to weigh as much as I do. Plus, the vacuum has to be carried up two flights of stairs. However, when I do finally attempt this, it makes such a big difference. Even if I don’t think that the floor is dirty to begin with, everything in the room just looks a lot brighter & more put together.

I’ve often heard the analogy that if you put a live frog in hot water, it will jump out. However, if you put a frog in cool water & slowly heat it up, you’ll have a cooked frog. No, this is not a recipe. However, I’m not even sure why such an analogy exists. However, it does say something very poignant about how apathy can creep up on us.
For instance, I used to hate lamps with barrel shades, or porcelain bases. They reminded me of a motel, & that’s not what I wanted my home to be. However, I just kept seeing them & seeing them. The designers would rave about them. Now, I love this kind of lamp, I even own one. I’ve even defended them. Cooked frog, thy name is Sarakastic.

That title sounds like a song lyric, it isn’t. Let me explain. I love everything about my house. I’ve spent a lot of time & money making it just the way I want it. My entire family helped to build the house, so it’s not like I can just go out & buy another one. A new house wouldn’t have the memories of the time when we were putting the roof on & all simultaneously broke out singing “If I had a hammer”. It felt like I was in a musical.
However, there is one huge problem with this house, it’s in Utah. This would be alright except for the fact that last year it snowed in September, & May, & a lot of time in between. I tend to get quite sick in the winter because of this. I’ve toyed around with the idea of moving somewhere else for the winter.
At first I thought of moving somewhere close. However, I can work anywhere with an internet connection, & there aren’t going to be a lot of times in my life when I can just pick up & leave. I could get a Crete winter let & live in Greece for the winter. I would have access to a lot of history & beaches, something that living in Arizona wouldn’t offer. It’s actually quite affordable, even less than what I would pay for an apartment here. Plus, I’d be able to pick up a lot of decorating inspiration, & get some great photos to hang on the walls. So yes, there will always be winter, I can’t change that. However, I can change how I spend my winter.
It’s fall which means HGTV has totally changed their lineup. There are very few shows that this channel seems to really hold onto. Then, those shows are subject to new hosts, sometimes several times a season. However, I’m a home improvement junky so I just keep watching.
“Find Your Style” is hosted by Karen from “Design Remix”. I haven’t been able to find any news about “Design Remix”, so hopefully it’s coming back. The premise of “Find Your Style” is that Karen helps people ummm find their style. The cool part of the show is that the homeowner’s go shopping & put the room together by themselves. However, I think that most people can do this on a budget. Karen has great energy as usual, & I’m glad I watched the show, but I won’t be tuning in regularly. I’d really rather watch “Design Remix”.
