If you are ever on Design Star…

Here’s a little bit of advice if you are ever a decorator on HGTV’s show “Design Star”. Remember that Vern Yip is a judge. As such, don’t fill up your room with knick knacks or clutter. I don’t care if you have to decorate your room from the dollar store. Vern will dock you on points for this every single time.

However, there are some designers who do this every season. At times, they do this every single episode. It is never inventive. Vern will comment on it every single time. Just say no to knick knacks.

Rules for collecting

A few years ago there were a rush of shows that were aimed at cleaning messy houses. I was amazed at the kind of clutter that people were living in. This was due in part to all of the crazy things people collect. Yes, a glass unicorn doesn’t seem like it would take up a lot of space. However, 200 glass unicorns might take up an entire bookshelf. This means that there isn’t a place for the books, which means the books will just displace something else & so on & so forth. I came up with a few rules for collecting so what I own is really special instead of just “stuff”.

  • If at all possible, the collection should be useful. This can be anything from CD’s to china. It also gives guests more of a chance to appreciate it. This way they won’t nickname you “The lady who owns 300 glass unicorns”. No one wants to be that person.
  • One or two collections per holiday. I love traditions. For awhile every Christmas I would collect a snowman, a Christmas village piece, & an angel ornament. The ornaments & village had sentimental value to me. The snowman collection evolved because there were always cute snowmen on sale. The snowmen were taking up storage space, so they had to go.

Wow, I only had two rules for collecting. Oh well, maybe that’s all it takes.

Blenders & commercials

I was watching Saturday Morning TV & I noticed something funny. (No, I wasn’t watching cartoons, there weren’t any good ones on). The commercial had a split screen & both houses were experiencing a power outage. One house was just encased in darkness & everyone was sad. The second house had a generator & they were using two blenders & had about 4 lights on & the whole neighborhood was having a party. My question is, when there’s a power outage, who thinks “Dang, I wish I could use the blender?” It’s a power outage, maybe the best use of your limited power shouldn’t be running two blenders. Where are these people’s priorities?

Flipping out

I’ve been meaning to write about “Flipping Out” for several weeks. Obviously I haven’t yet or I wouldn’t be starting this post with “I’ve been meaning to”. Technically the first season is over. So yes, I’m really late on this one. Even Rosie O’Donnell bloggged about her love for the show before I did.

The show follows Jeff Lewis who remodels houses for a profit. “The onions, the onions” will probably become an everyday catch phrase. I’m actually a little afraid to say too much about this show in case he sees this blog & feels the need to correct me. However, if you get the chance to see this show, it’s definitely worth watching.

Designed to Sell, where art thou?

If I could have any decorating show come to my house it would be “Designed to Sell”. I wouldn’t even answer the door if “Trading Spaces” knocked. I wouldn’t even want the hike in taxes if “Extreme Makeover Home edition” came to visit.

“Designed to Sell” is perfect because they really know how to update a house without spending a lot of money. One of the things that they always do is update light fixtures & install chandeliers all over the place. It seems like they install chandeliers even as bathroom light fixtures. That’s fine by me. The more bling in a house, the better.

Farreys.com has every kind of light fixture that you can imagine. They even have a lot of the top manufacturers at some of the lowest prices. I really like that you can shop by brand, application & even style. The only bad part of “Designed to Sell” is that you have to be trying to sell your home. Oh well, maybe I’ll just hang up chandeliers in every room. What decorating show would you want to visit your house?
