Last minute halloween

Ipumpkintower.jpg‘m more than a little late writing a post about Halloween crafts. Martha Stewart probably started her Halloween shows months ago. Then again, no one has ever confused me with Martha. So here are a few ideas for jack o lanterns if you are trying to put something together at the last minute.

The last Halloween event I went to had an assortment of funny noises & glasses & small hats. They had even gotten some foam kits full of teeth & eyes. It was an easy & mess free way to decorate a pumpkin.

Another option is painting a pumpkin with acrylic paint. This saves the hassle of gutting the pumpkin & you can use more color than with traditional carving.

I’ve been seeing a lot of decorative pumpkin carving. These aren’t supposed to look like anything, they are just supposed to be pretty so carve your pumpkin with a series of scrolls, s’, or polka dots.

What to say when a design show goes bad

I’m so codependant that I hate watching the reveals on design shows when the room is awful. My heart really goes out to the families that try to put on a brave face. Some examples of this are:

I had a great experience. I don’t even care about my room, everyone on the show was so nice.

It’s what we signed up for.

That’s different. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

I’ll live with it for awhile & see how it feels.

Either way, you still have hay glued to your walls but at least you didn’t scream on national TV.

Conserve

As environmentally friendly as Ed Begley Jr. is he always seems to be worried about his water usage on his show “Living with Ed”. Honestly, I’d never given it a lot of thought before then. I live in Utah so anyone who wants to have a lawn has to have a sprinkler system.

However, even here there are ways to conserve. For instance, I was looking at Cyber-Rain.com. First off, you can set your watering schedule from your computer which means you won’t have to mess with complicated timers. Cyber-Rain adjusts the watering that takes place based on a weather forecast that it gets from the internet. Compare this to other sprinkler systems that water the same amount no matter the season or weather. This wastes time & money but Cyber-Rain changes all of that. Besides the fact that over watering your lawn can damage it. This system can save you between 30-70% on your landscape watering bill. It even tracks your water savings. It’s still possible to have a beautiful green lawn & conserve. Isn’t technology grand?

Design Words that Aren’t Really Words

Here are just a few words that I often hear on design shows that aren’t words. Everyone says them like they are words. That doesn’t make them words. A few of these are in the dictionary but they shouldn’t be.

Functionality: It’s just function. Functionality is just silliness I don’t care what the dictionary says.

Napkin Ring Holders: Napkin holders. Napkin rings. Napkin ring holders is just redundant. Redundant. (See how I said redundant twice? It made me laugh).

Homeownership: Again, a person is a homeowner. It implies that they own a house. Homeownership is just redundant redundant.

What words do you hear on design shows that aren’t really words?

Good for you & the environment

When I was a kid I learned about solar power in science class every single year. I didn’t really think about it again until I was older & had my own apartment. I was shocked that our utility bills were almost as much as our rent. Can you say ouch? The costs have only risen & they just keep going up & up. Unfortunately, my income doesn’t increase with all of these added costs.

Besides the fact that I worry about some of the effects on the environment as well as on my wallet. Today I was at a site called Solar Panels Plus. I had no idea that I could get a solar air conditioner or water heating system. You can even use a solar collector with an existing hot water system & they come with a manufacturer’s 10 year warranty. Plus these systems are quite affordable. There are even Federal & State tax rebates & energy incentives available. It’s amazing to think that there is finally a source of energy that is good for your wallet & the environment.
