I’m watching “Brothers & Sisters” for the first time ever & was totally blown away & not just because they let Alley McBeal be on TV when she’s that thin. My favorite part of this show is the set. I wish I could live in that house, well not if I had all of that family around. Maybe I’ll just have the set moved into my house when the show ends. Remember when Kramer moved the Merv Griffin set into his house? I could totally do that. Barring that, here are a few decorating tips that I’ve learned from the show.
- I’ve never been a fan of wallpaper. The new wallpaper seems to be grass cloth. This can actually work when a room is full of a lot of light.
- A house doesn’t always need a punch of color. This home is decorated all in rich browns & other neutrals. It works because there is a lot of light & white trim & cupboards to offset it.
- A nice piece of furniture can go a long way. Even if you have to pick up a rich dark piece of furniture at a flea market or garage sale, this will really make a home feel elegant.

There used to be a show on cable about ordinary people who would have plastic surgery so that they looked like their favorite celebrities. Granted, I love celebrities. I have always envied the celebrity lifestyle. However, I think that’s just a little extreme.
This got me thinking though, the one part of celebrity living that I envy are their homes. It’s actually completely possible to get the look of a celebrity home, on my budget. It’s just a matter of knowing how they decorate, this can be done by looking through magazines for inspiration.
The one thing that I’ve noticed about celebrity homes is that the stars choose things that suit their personalities & that they really love. Then it’s just a matter of going through a Contemporary furniture store like Home Living. I love this store because of the high end feel that all of their furniture has. They even have the cutest baby cradles that I’ve ever seen. Those are the things that really make a home feel high end, attention to the little details. When you walk into a house & even their bathroom vanities are unique & detailed it gives the whole home an air of elegance. It’s just a matter of knowing where to shop. It’s possible to have celebrity style on a budget.

I’ve been watching "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" & it seems like her apartment should be outdated, & the shag carpeting probably is, but I still like the overall feel of it. I think all of us have wished for such an apartment at some time. Here are some decorating tips to having a modern day MTM apartment.
1. Studio apartments can be cool. It’s better to have them look like a living space, than just have a bed sitting in the middle of nowhere.
2. Have your signature. For Mary it was a big "M" on the wall. This meant that even though she lived in a rental, it felt like hers. It also meant that when she left, she could take the important part with her.
3. Every girl needs a closet as big as the rest of her place.
4. It helps if you have quirky neighbors who are always popping in & being hilarious. Granted, it doesn’t happen a whole lot in real life, but when it does, it really makes a place feel like home.
Mary Tyler Moore’s apartment wasn’t great, but it was her first "real" place all by herself & she didn’t care that it was only a rental.

"Gilmore Girls" will be ending tonight, & I just realized that I haven’t written about Lorelai’s home makeover. I guess I better hurry if I’m going to write this, we have no time, no time people. Actually we have about 5 hours & 43 minutes, not that I’m counting.
Like everything else when the new creators took over the show, things got a little spruce. Paris got highlights in her hair, even though she’s totally not the highlight kind of person. The Gilmore house was changed quite a bit, even though it hadn’t really been touched for 5 or 6 years. The vintage kitchen tiles are suddenly a little peppier, Lorelei’s bedroom is completely different. Plus, there was another makeover when Lorelai got rid of everything that Luke had touched after they had broken up.
However, it just wasn’t kept true to the Gilmore name. The look is very uncluttered. That’s so not Gilmore, they always have monkey lamps around the house, & rabbi statues. Lorelai was very excited that she was going to buy a new bedroom set, but it was much uglier, & older looking than the one that Luke inherited that caused such a fuss. I’ll admit that they tried to be true to the Gilmores & kept the new furniture vintage looking, but like everything else in this season, it just missed the mark. The Gilmore have style, they live in a home, look how amazingly the Dragonfly Inn is decorated. Maybe it’s a metaphor for Lorelai’s empty life, but I don’t want a metaphor, I want pretty. I feel like the house doesn’t have the soul in it that it once did. I just hope that the turtle with the key in it is still on the porch.
