Turn your home into a castle on a budget

Wedding FavorThere are only about a million things to remember when planning a wedding.  It seems like something is either forgotten, or the budget just won’t stretch anymore.  This doesn’t mean that you have to forego wedding favors.  One of my favorite wedding favors was also a place card.  On the inside of the place card the bride or groom had written a personal note.  The note told us why we were invited to the wedding & the effect we had on their life.  It’s one of the few favors that I’ve kept. Yes it takes some work, but it’s virtually free, & definitely something that will be remembered

I know that it’s important to preserve memories. However, I just walk into the scrapbooking store & my brain freezes. I wander glassy eyed through the aisles, completely overwhelmed by everything. Plus, there was an unfortunate incident when I was younger when I scrapbooked by cutting all of the backgrounds out of my pictures & then gluing them on the same page.

This is why I was so excited to hear about digital scrapbooking. I can just put my pictures on the computer & be good to go. The only problem is that I never seem to get around to actually ordering prints of my digital photos, (bad I know). So if something happened to my computer I would be in huge trouble & lose years of memories. Which is why I need a online backup like Idrive. They have 2GB of backup that’s easy to restore & you can backup everything from documents to MP3’s. I love their slogan which is to “save the world, one computer at the time”. It’s so true because if I lost my hard drive I would lose so many things that are important to me. The best part is that it’s free, or just $4.95 for a pro account with UNLIMITED space. Yes I said unlimited.. I will definitely be trying this out because there are just too many things that I just can’t stand to lose.

Mother’s Day is coming up so fast, that most places won’t be able to ship for Mother’s Day in time. So that leaves shopping around town, trying to decide exactly which card you got for her last year. However, there is still the option of making her something. I stumbled upon instructions for this handmade patchwork quilt. Here are some reasons why you should consider this for a Mother’s Day gift.

  • I think it would be fairly easy to get this quilt done this weekend because the patches are quite big.
  • You can always tie it with french knots for a more elegant look, because there probably won’t be time to quilt it. If you are really crunched for time, you can just make it a lap size quilt, or even a wall hanging.
  • I’ve made several quilts this way, & I’m a sewing newbie, so if I can do it anyone can.
  • I love how it doesn’t look like a traditional quilt.
  • You can easily turn it into a memory quilt by using scraps of fabric from your old babies or anything else your Mom holds dear.

When I was in college I was pretty broke, & Mother’s Day was coming up.  I couldn’t even afford the $3-$4 for a store bought card, & I wanted my mother to have a nice present.  I remembered watching Oprah & she encouraged people to write letters really expressing how you felt about someone. So often we wait until people have passed on to express our true feelings & favorite memories, & that’s a shame.

This can either be done on a handmade card, or a plain piece of paper.  It’s a treasure that people will probably keep forever & is just as important as a fancy gift & much better than a generic Mother’s Day card that you just sign your name to.
