To decorate or not to decorate

To decorate or not to decorate that is the question. Whether it is nobler to celebrate every single holiday or to have enough room to park a car in your garage… Actually I don’t know any more of the Hamlet line so my fake quote will stop right there. I have friends who decorate for every single holiday. Of course, I’ll decorate for Christmas, but trying to find decorations for Columbus Day is a little stressful to me. So I say bah humbug to decorating for all of the holidays. Here’s why:

  • It takes up a lot of space. It may seem like you just have one or two decorations for every single holiday but all of that adds up. These decorations are only used a few days a year & the rest of the time they just take up precious garage space.
  • I hate taking down holiday decorations. If you decorate for Valentine’s day & you leave the decorations up for a little while, then it’s time to get out the St. Patrick’s decorations. It just keeps going in this viscous cycle of cleaning procrastination.
  • I like my regular decor. To me, a lot of decorations are just clutter.
  • If you leave the decorations up too long visitors can figure out when the last time you cleaned the house was by counting how long it’s been since the last holiday.

Do you decorate for holidays besides Christmas?

Fall home accessories

autumnleaves2.jpgFall is my favorite time of year. It’s always nice to see that Mother Nature’s favorite color is orange too. I knew that I was right. Here are a few easy ideas for fall inspired home accessories. Some of them are even free.

I’ve pressed fall leaves between books for a few days & then framed them in a variety of dollar store frames. This made for a large, impressive wall collage on a college student’s budget.

I’m not a photographer by any means. However, if you just go outside & take close up pictures of leaves you are bound to get a few good shots. During autumn it seems like it’s difficult to take a bad picture.

Use autumn colors. If you have a neutral home, bring in burgundies, oranges & yellows through pillows & throws. This will give your home a luxurious feeling that is still fun & elegant. Having fall inspired home accessories should make winter a lot less dreary. At last that’s what I’m hoping because it started snowing here about three weeks ago.

What’s up with Trading Spaces

I’ve been trying to find out about “Trading Spaces”. Everything that I’ve googled says that the new season premiere doesn’t start until the 16th. However, I know I saw a new episode last Saturday. I pinky swear. I wasn’t even dreaming.

I missed the first part of the episode. There are new designers, new carpenters & maybe new rules. The best part of the episode was Frank saying something to the effect of “When are we going to hire carpenters that actually look human?”. I didn’t see the very beginning of the show, but it didn’t look like they were working with $1,000. Plus ,they didn’t recap how much money was spent at the end. I think that “Trading Spaces” is basically killing their show. We have a host, no we don’t. We have a budget, no we don’t. We respect the homeowner’s opinions, no we don’t. Find something & stick to it.

Art & business christmas cards

Art can come in all forms. There are so many different things that you could put in a frame & mat & then have a unique piece of artwork in your home. There are even greeting cards that I think qualify as art. This could be something as simple as hanging all of the business christmas cards on a ribbon to display them for the holidays.

The Gallery Collection offers high quality business Christmas cards. I know as a customer, I usually remember the companies that have sent me a Christmas card. It’s a nice touch that shows that your business cares. It also keeps the name of your business in other people’s heads. The Gallery Collection even offers stunning foil imprinting, or you can use your company logo. You can even have your return address printed on the envelope which will save a lot of time trying to write out your address.

The Gallery Collection is a family business which has been around since 1929. Yes, I said 1929. The site is also offering a scholarship contest that is open to high school & college students. The prize is a $10,000 scholarship. So much for the term “struggling artist”. I think that this is a great opportunity for students to get in touch with their creativity. All you have to do is create a greeting card. Doesn’t that sound like fun? The entry can be a photo, artwork, or even computer graphics. My point is that there is no “art store” to go & visit. Whether you are trying to decorate or you’re an artist it’s all about creating what you love. Surrounding yourself with things that you love will make your house into a home even Christmas cards.

Finding Decorating Perspective

When trying to decorate a house you usually stay inside. In fact I’ve spent hours staring at paint swatches. I’ve done this so much that I almost start to cry whenever the color brown is mentioned. A fairly significant portion of my life has been spent trying to find just the right shade of brown for certain rooms or projects.

It’s so easy to get frustrated & overwhelmed when trying to decorate. I remember an episode of “Gilmore Girls” where Lorelai carried around paint samples trying to pick a color for the living room. She stalked her neighbors & even asked her dog’s help in trying to make this decision.

Here’s my advice: leave the house, stop thinking about it. When you say something like “Oh that’s cute”, make a note of it. This could be a sweater, a flower, or even food. Today I went to the mountains & there were so many different color inspirations. It’s amazing how Mother Nature puts things together so they don’t clash.
