Decorating Princess

Turn your home into a castle on a budget

Here’s a little bit of advice if you are ever a decorator on HGTV’s show “Design Star”. Remember that Vern Yip is a judge. As such, don’t fill up your room with knick knacks or clutter. I don’t care if you have to decorate your room from the dollar store. Vern will dock you on points for this every single time.

However, there are some designers who do this every season. At times, they do this every single episode. It is never inventive. Vern will comment on it every single time. Just say no to knick knacks.

I’ve been meaning to write about “Flipping Out” for several weeks. Obviously I haven’t yet or I wouldn’t be starting this post with “I’ve been meaning to”. Technically the first season is over. So yes, I’m really late on this one. Even Rosie O’Donnell bloggged about her love for the show before I did.

The show follows Jeff Lewis who remodels houses for a profit. “The onions, the onions” will probably become an everyday catch phrase. I’m actually a little afraid to say too much about this show in case he sees this blog & feels the need to correct me. However, if you get the chance to see this show, it’s definitely worth watching.

Kim won! Kim won! Kim won! Kim won! Well, you get the picture. I was pretty ecstatic when she won Design Star last night. I think she will be a great host, & HGTV really doesn’t have anyone like her. I adored Todd, but he reminded me a lot of David who won last year. The season finale of “Design Star” was the typical reunion show. Here’s what happened:

  • Sparkle Josh showed up with the worst tan I’ve ever seen, but he’s so adorable it doesn’t matter.
  • Everyone tried to pretend like Rob wasn’t the huge jerk that he really is.
  • All of the HGTV hosts wished the contestants good luck in such a generic way that it didn’t even sound like they knew the names of the final two.

Sunday afternoon TV isn’t the best. This means that I have the choice of bowling, golf, or PBS. I love watching the “Joy of Painting” with Bob Ross. I just love how it makes it seem possible to finish a painting in half an hour. Just for anyone out there who is wondering, it isn’t. Trust me.

Last Sunday, I was introduced to “Simply Painting” with Frank Clarke. I learned about his theory of “Have Some More Fun”. This means that your painting should develop by painting the horizon, then the sky, middle, foreground. He is one of the more enjoyable artists that I’ve ever seen. I’ve never tried one of his paintings, but I doubt that there is anything simple about it, but the show was much better than watching bowling.
