The right indoor paint colors will solve problems instead of create them. It seems like beginning painters always go towards different shades of white or beige.  Then they give up on the power of painting because it didn’t make that big of a difference in their room. The other end of the spectrum is someone who makes a drastic change. Maybe they’ve had white walls all this time and suddenly they decide that red is the way to go.  After 13 coats of blotchy paint they end up hating their rooms just because it’s overwhelming and poorly executed. Here are a few tips to find the right indoor paint colors.

Match what is already going on in your room. You might have your heart set on something really bold like purple.  Then you’re disappointed when you get it up and it sticks out like a sore thumb from your furniture and the rest of your house. The trick is to take into account your existing furniture and flooring as the basis for your design.  You should compliment what you already have but you can still be bold.

Consider the light in your space. This will determine how saturated or bright a color will look. You’ll probably want to bring your paint chips home beforehand just so you can see how they look in your actual space. A lot of paint lines have small sample sizes available that you can buy so you can paint it directly on your wall.  The downside is that then you’ll have to paint for sure because you’ll have paint samples all over your walls.

Give the eye space to rest.  This is the most common mistake beginners make. They start throwing greens and purples and blues together and all of the colors look great on a small fabric sample. Then they actually get it up on the walls and they are horrified. This is because the eye needs some room to figure out what is going on. There’s such a thing as too much color and it happens quite frequently.  It will make your room feel dark or claustrophobic. You’ll want to have at least one neutral color in your space. This will make your more dramatic colors pop because of the contrast.

Indoor paint colors can change the mood of your room.   It can make small rooms feel bigger and give a theme to boring rooms.  Understanding what a big difference the right color can make in your space can really transform how you feel about decorating.  Plus, it’s one of the most budget friendly ways to decorate.

Go for a spa like feel.  This is perfect for smaller spaces because there are a lot of neutral colors. It will really compliment any natural stone or tile that you already have in your room. A spa like feel would have white, taupe or a very pale green on the walls.  You could also get away with a gray paint as long as it isn’t too dark.  This would give the room more of a Zen feeling to it.  Then you can just add in an accent color as long as it’s natural like a green or brown.  This gives interest to the room and you can accomplish it easily just by changing out your towels and rugs.

Pick a wood tone.  This can be either paint or stain. For a country cottage feel you could paint all of the wood in the room a cream color.  If modern is your thing then try updating your vanity with black paint. You can also go for an elegant or Tuscan theme by accenting a subtle paint color with a rich wood stain like mahogany or espresso.

Pick a color that feels fresh.  You might just want your bathroom to feel simple or clean.  Cool colors like lavender, blue and green are perfect for this situation. These cool colors are said to make a room recede a little so they are perfect for smaller rooms.

Use paint as a way to update your room. Changing out tiles and fixtures is one of the most expensive remodeling projects out there.  This is one of the reasons why kitchens and bathrooms are the most expensive rooms to remodel. You might be holding off on painting until you can come up with the tens of thousands of dollars needed to redo your room.  However, paint just costs a few dollars and it can change how you feel about your room in the meantime.  Find a color that compliments the existing tile so you can still be happy with your home for a few years until you can undertake the renovation.

Paint colors for bathrooms transform the feeling of your space. You can totally fall in love all over again with that claw foot tub just by changing out your wall color. This is one of the first rooms you see in the morning and the last ones you see at night so make sure it makes a good impression on you.

1. First they think of a cool title & then create a show around it. Even if the title is stupid. Even if the show shouldn’t be on TV. Case in point: Blog Cabin. Yes there is a show where they build a log cabin based on designs from a blog. I’m sure this idea was hatched because someone in the break room said “Log cabin? Isn’t that like a blog cabin?” It wasn’t funny then, & it isn’t funny now.

2. HGTV they love their puns. I’m sure that they do so many complete kitchen remodels just so they can say “We got rid of everything & the kitchen sink.”

3. Most of the rooms lately seem to be painted green just so they can joke about being environmentally friendly.

I love HGTV but I liked it a lot better before they got all punny.

I like a coffee table that I can put my feet on. Judging from the low price, so do other people. It seemed like when I was a kid everyone had a glass coffee table. I hated it because I was a kid & couldn’t touch anything. Really, a glass coffee table just seems to take up space. Yes, you can put drinks on it, but that’s about it. Plus, you have to clean the glass & what is the fun in that.

I usually try to recreate decorating looks on a budget. It’s my thing. However, I can’t help but lust after an antique Chinese wedding bed. The first problem with this is the fact that it would be more expensive then my car. The second problem with this is that it would be way too big for my bedroom which has sloped ceilings. So basically I’d have to buy a new house. That is one expensive bed, but I can’t help it. I want it. I am a princess after all. What is your guilty decorating pleasure?

There has been some controversy on whether this show “stocks” the garages beforehand.  People always seem to have gorgeous bolts of silk fabric even though they don’t sew.  However, I was just watching an episode where Karen couldn’t find a lot of materials so she had to go over budget.  I guess that means that Design Remix is real.

I think it’s a great idea because they get to take the house for a test drive. Buyers get to see things like can they sleep through the noise of a nearby street? (They never can) I think it’s a novel idea. I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to try it. It would just feel weird to be living in someone else’s house with all of their things. Plus, I’d be mildly afraid that the place was haunted. Would you try it?

Lately, I find Antiques Roadshow to be depressing. It seems to go like this:

Auctioneer: Tell us about this piece.

Person: Well, it was passed down from my great grandmother to my grandma to my mom then to my. I just want to learn more about it.

Auctioneer: Do you have any idea what it is worth?

Person: I really have no clue, it has tons of sentimental value. I want to give it to my daughter someday.

Auctioneer: Well, it’s worth $183

Person: I had no idea. Where can I sell it?

It just makes me sad to see so many people willing to sell their heirlooms so they can buy an ipod or something. If it was $118,000, yes I’d probably sell it, but other than that Antiques Roadshow just makes me sad.
