Almost Free Christmas Ornaments

poinsetta.jpg

I’ve been seeing a lot of poinsettias on Christmas trees lately. I visited several large well known stores which I won’t mention here because their prices were awful. For one fake poinsettia stem it was anywhere from $4-$8.

I finally went to the dollar store & found some lovely velvet poinsettias that came out to 6 flowers for $1. I guess poinsettias are a flower. I was amazed at what a difference it made to the tree. These poinsettias are a great way to fill in gaps & add dimension & texture to a tree, besides the fact that they are just plain pretty.

All I want for Christmas are Christmas decorations

berrywreath.jpgFor several years I’ve been wanting a red berry wreath. However:

Usually when I see a berry wreath I need to spend the money on Christmas presents.

They seem to never go out of style, so they are never on clearance.

Usually, when I want something I just ask to get it for a Christmas present. However, it just seems silly to open up a Christmas decoration on Christmas.

What holiday decoration have you always wanted?

To decorate or not to decorate

To decorate or not to decorate that is the question. Whether it is nobler to celebrate every single holiday or to have enough room to park a car in your garage… Actually I don’t know any more of the Hamlet line so my fake quote will stop right there. I have friends who decorate for every single holiday. Of course, I’ll decorate for Christmas, but trying to find decorations for Columbus Day is a little stressful to me. So I say bah humbug to decorating for all of the holidays. Here’s why:

  • It takes up a lot of space. It may seem like you just have one or two decorations for every single holiday but all of that adds up. These decorations are only used a few days a year & the rest of the time they just take up precious garage space.
  • I hate taking down holiday decorations. If you decorate for Valentine’s day & you leave the decorations up for a little while, then it’s time to get out the St. Patrick’s decorations. It just keeps going in this viscous cycle of cleaning procrastination.
  • I like my regular decor. To me, a lot of decorations are just clutter.
  • If you leave the decorations up too long visitors can figure out when the last time you cleaned the house was by counting how long it’s been since the last holiday.

Do you decorate for holidays besides Christmas?

Going green for Christmas

I was watching “Living with Ed”. Most of the changes that he makes to his home are too expensive or crazy for me to consider. However, I think that he really gets people thinking about going green & about their everyday impact on the environment. He was recently very excited because he found an energy efficient way to use Christmas lights. I had never thought about Christmas light usage.

However, I was reading about mini lights LED & I was surprised to find out that LED mini lights are 80% more efficient than incandescent Christmas lights They are also better for outdoor use because they have weather proof construction. Plus, these lights will last a lot longer which means that you’ll save a lot more money. An incandescent light lasts for about 2000 hours while a mini light LED lasts for about 50,000 hours. Plus, a LED mini light is made of plastic which is pretty much indestructible. This means that you won’t have to spent time trying to figure out which bulb is broken so you can get the entire strand of lights to work. With HolidayLEDS it’s only $.99 for shipping on all orders & they have a huge selection. They even have antique looking LED lights. I know that Christmas is a stressful time with a lot of things to think about, but going green for Christmas might be easier than you think.

Look what the dollar store had

HPIM0504.JPG

I was at the dollar store & saw all of this furry yarn. Then I tried to keep myself from jumping up & down. I’d never knit with it before because I hate when I spend more on knitting than I do on food. So my mom & I decided to make scarves for Christmas gifts. I decided to use a knitting loom because we have tons of family & not a lot of time. Besides the fact that I’ve been stressed out lately & wrapping yarn around a peg is about all that I can handle

I’ve been looking around & there are even different stitches that can be done on the knitting loom, but most of the patterns are smarter than I am. So in the end I decided to ignore the fact that the dollar store also had very cute ready made scarves for sell & hopefully everyone will be happy with their handmade presents.
